A mixed sensation of rawon, satay and sambal

Like other places in Indonesia, East Java province has specific local culinary, such as rawon and rujak cingur. Rawon is a kind of beef soup with black gravy and strong taste of keluwek or Achariaceae. Rujak cingur has cow lips, vegetables, fruits, tofu, and lontong (rice cake) served with special paste made from ground peanut and petis (a dark brown paste made from an extract of shrimp or fish).

But, to enjoy the famous culinary, you do not need to go to East Java, since those menu are available in some cities outside East Java, such as in Bekasi, West Java. In the city, you can find Rumah Makan Bumbu Gurih, which is located in Taman Harapan Baru, North Bekasi.

Since established in 2012, the stall has served East Java traditional menus. “At the moment, no place served East Java specific culinary, whereas this area has a number of East Javanese. Therefore, we focused in serving those specialties," said the owner of the stall Eko Bakti.

Aside of rawon and rujak cingur, the stall also serves chicken soto, madura soto, ribs soup, as well as smashed fried chicken and cat fish.

The stall targets more on the residents, who live nearby the stall, than employees or workers. “The customers come and go so that the place is never over crowded,” Eko said.

So you can just drop by the stall if you are passing by the area. However, please make sure that you do not have dietary restrictions with fatty foods, as the rawon is quite fatty, both the thick-brown gravy and the pieces of beefs. The traces of fat are obviously found on the edge of the bowl.

The rawon and rice are served separately. The rice is served on a plate with raw bean sprouts and raw chili shrimp paste. Normally, rawon has salty egg as a companion dish. However, this place serves sate komo or beef satay without sauce as the companion dish. “Pasuruan people serve rawon with sate komo, not salty egg as the companion dish," Eko said.

How does it taste? The rawon has a savory taste with a strong tastes of spices. The beef slices are big enough, but also soft and easy to chew.

Bumbu Gurih also has a specific chili taste. In general, the rawon is accompanied with chili paste, whcih made only from bird’s eye chili. However, Bumbu Gurih serves sambal terasi, which comprises of green bird’s eye chili and dried shrimp paste. The sambal terasi does not only bring hot and spicy sensations, but also a strong aroma and taste of shrimp to the dish. For a portion of rawon, you only need to spend IDR23,000.

Pasuruan petis

Aside of rawon, Bumbu Gurih is also popular for its rujak cingur, an East Javanese delicacy that is almost similar with gado-gado (a kind of Indonesian vegetables salad served with ground peanut sauce). Unlike gado-gado, the sauce of rujak cingur made from a mixture of ground peanut and petis.

The tastes are also different. Gado-gado is identic with hot and sweet taste, while rujak cingur has a mixed tastes of sweet, salty, and savory, as well as spicy flavor.

Gado-gado only consits of vegetables, while rujak cingur has vegetables, such as jicama, cucumber, long bean, kangkong, and bean sprouts, as well as tofu and slices of cow mouth. You can order for lontong (rice cake) if you want. All mixed together with peanut and petis sauce. “We have a supply of petis directly from Pasuruan (East Java)," Eko said. For a portion of rujak cingur, including the lontong, customer only need to spend IDR17,000.

The only fish menu in Bumbu Gurih is bandeng penyet (smashed milkfish), which is served with raw chili shrimp paste. This is very suitable to enjoy with a plate of warm rice. The price of a portion of bandeng penyet, excluding the rice is IDR 17,000.
